The Shire Hobbiton is a drop-dead gorgeous tourist attraction in Matamata, New Zealand. Being The Lord Of The Rings’ fan or not, everyone NEEDS to explore this beautiful hidden gem. Even though the movies are over and done, but thanks to the enchanting village, the movies will forever be in our minds, especially mine!
The story…
In 1998, Sir Peter Jackson, the director of the iconic movie The Lord of The Ring went for a location scout. The requirements? Iconic rolling hills and lush green pastures of Hobbiton. In time, it eventually led them to the Alexander farm, a stunning 1,250-acre sheep farm in the heart of the Waikato. And just like that, the Hobbits had found their home.
More than just about the unique Hobbits home…
Once you’re there, you will spot a magnificent pine tree that towered over a nearby lake, adjacent to a rising hill. B-E-A-U-tiful! That’s one of the spots that are definitely Instagram worthy. Up till today, the rest of the area is left untouchable–no power lines, no buildings and no roads in sight. When the production ended in 2009, Sir Peter Jackson left behind the beautiful movie set that we are seeing today; 44 permanently reconstructed Hobbit holes.
